MEDICAL SCRIBING
A medical scribe is a professional who documents doctor-patient interactions as they occur. They also provide the doctor with the whole patient history that is essential for the patient's care. Depending on the field of practice, the scribe may also be referred to as a "clinical scribe," "ER scribe," or "ED scribe" (emergency department).
One of the primary roles of a medical scribe is to accompany a doctor's workday and record patient encounters using an electronic health record in real time (EHR). The use of medical scribes frees up the doctor's time so that he or she can see more patients, manage patient flow through the department, and operate more efficiently.
A Medical Scribe's work responsibilities include the following:
- Organizes and prepares medical record paperwork
- During a patient visit, enters the patient room with the physician to capture and transcribe medical record paperwork using an electronic medical record application.
- Self documentation attestation ensures medical record compliance.
- As allocated, performs other clerical activities and tasks to optimize provider productivity and clinical workflow.
- Updates the patient's history, physical exam, and other essential health information.
